Mohd. Qamar Khan - A Brief Introduction
I feel pleasure in introducing Jnaab Mohd Qamar Khan who besides an intense Urdu lover is a well-recognised teacher of Urdu too. He hardly needs any introduction. He is Honorary Incharge of Urdu Coaching Centre at UP Urdu Academy, Lucknow which runs a 6-months' course free of cost for people who want to learn to read and write Urdu.
Mr Khan has the distinction of having been awarded at various platforms like Human Welfare Society, Lucknow for devising innovative approach for teaching Urdu. His students includes people from all age groups starting from teenagers to septugenarians. Interestingly, none of his students have any knowledge of Urdu language before enrolling for the course, however, after attending his classes, they start trying their hand in Creative writing in Urdu. And his students include- doctors, university teachers, senior bank officers, police officers, judicial officials etc, to cut the list short!
He takes great pains in teaching Urdu language and ever since his retirement in 2014 from a Senior Banking position, and after his return from Haj Pilgrimage, he set out on this noble mission of serving Urdu Language by teaching this language to anybody who loves/cares to learn this beautiful language. During his entire service period of 35 years, he was posted in a bank at Hazratganj Lucknow and retired from the same bank as Branch Manager.
Generally, it is misunderstood that Urdu is the language of Muslims. During his initial lectures, he convinces the students that the day-to-day language spoken in India is Hindostani which is a beautiful bouquet of Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Farsi etc. He is quite concerned about the way the Urdu words are pronounced wrongly and hence they don't convey the true spirit of those 'alfaaz'(words) to the receiver. He also lays a lot of stress on correct 'talaffuz' (pronunciation) of the urdu words. He takes care of Islaah-e-talaffuz of some of the popular plays staged at Lucknow.
He is associated as a resource person with well-known Talha Society and Kishwari Konnect for their projects related to Urdu Teaching and Urdu Talaffuz etc. In this connection, he also participated in Talaffuz Workshops organised at All India Radio Lucknow, Prasar Bharti New Delhi, and Press Club of India, Delhi.
Besides being a great teacher of Elementary Urdu, he is involved in a number of activities for promotion Urdu language. He has done 2-year Diploma in Urdu Sahafat from Aligarh - and also completed his Post-Graduation Degree in Urdu with honour from the same place. He regularly attends various Urdu and Hindi Literary programs and motivates his students too be in touch with the literary circles.
Having first hand information about his teaching style, it is being said with conviction that he teaches Urdu so well that many of students who are in their 50-60s (including this writer), very soon start reading and writing Urdu. The certificate offered by UP Urdu Academy is of Middle Standard. However, after learning from him, some of his students have passed Urdu of High-School and Intermediate Standard. And most of them are in regular touch with him!
Having born and brought up in Lucknow and then having got the chance of completing entire service here at Lucknow only, he says, had always this feeling that he could not serve Urdu language, in spite of being lover of Urdu Zubaan. This is the reason he set on this journey of teaching urdu and when Urdu Academy selected him out of many Urdu Scholars, it was indeed a god-send opportunity. In fact, Mr Khan is quite well-versed with Hindi as well English. His 'calligraphic handwriting' is 'icing on the cake'.
As you see from his blog posts, he has a wealth of knowledge about Lucknow and he is so eager to share that knowledge with his readers. Tehreergo Mohd Qamar Khan as his friends have started calling him uses simple expressions while describing grandeur of Old Lucknow. Presently he is busy in writing on Maazi ke aaineh mein - Lucknow ke qdeem Tmasha Ghar! He has a couple of other ambitious projects in hand. He regularly appears on All India Radio, Lucknow in Urdu programs.
